MESSAGE

Malaysia is proud to be a member of the Federation of Asia Oceania Perinatal Societies and it is with pleasure that we look forward to being host for FAOPS 2004.

Looking after the welfare of mothers and their infants is indeed a high priority for any nation. It ensures that each and every citizen gets the best possible start in life contributes positively towards a healthy and productive future generation. It is my wish that by coming together and comparing practices you will encourage each other to go on learning and thinking, absorbing and applying new and innovative ideas that will lead to improvement of perinatal care in this region. I hope that participants at this Congress will also strive to achieve the highest standards of scientific work and perinatal care in their daily work and profession and further enhance the practice of evidence-based medicine.

I am convinced that a meeting of this nature will further improve the good relations that already exist between the member countries and further strengthen the health, wealth and stability of the region.

Malaysia also promises much for all our guests and visitors. Being a country of diverse cultural and ethnic groups we truly represent Asia with its endearing customs, culture, cuisine, warmth and hospitality. Our unspoiled tropical beaches, forests and caves will be a joy to visit while our shops, and arcades will provide hours of delightful shopping.

I am sure you will have a rewarding and enriching Congress.

Message from the FAOPS President

Dear Colleagues,

Perinatal Health in our region relies on the health care infrastructure of individual countries as well as new knowledge presented at our congresses.

Every two years the Federation brings together midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians and scientists of many disciplines to share new knowledge in the ability to care for the mother, fetus and newborn. This time we will meet in Kuala Lumpur in 2004.

I extend my warmest invitation to you to attend the 13th Congress of the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies in Kuala Lumpur in April 2004. Kuala Lumpur is known for its cosmopolitan ambience. Malaysia also offers a variety of recreations in the mountains as well as by the sea. With the theme of 'Back to Basics……. and Much More!', the scientific program promises a comprehensive coverage of perinatal subjects.

I sincerely hope you will be able to make the necessary arrangements to participate in this congress.

Professor Kamheang Chaturachinda

President FAOPS

Invitation and Welcome

The 13th Congress of the Federation of Asia-Oceania Perinatal Societies (FAOPS) will be held on the 14th to 18th April 2004 in Kuala Lumpur. The biennial meetings of the FAOPS have become a tradition and important gathering of the best of minds in perinatal health and medicine from the Asia-Oceania region. We invite not only obstetricians and neonatologists/paediatricians but also family practitioners, public health workers, midwives, neonatal nurses, pathologists, geneticists, epidemiologists and others working in this fascinating world of the unborn and newborn child to come together to share their experience and expertise with each other in this ever rapidly developing field.

The scientific programme endeavours to cover perinatal issues both at the molecular and clinical level, and of importance to both developed and developing countries. Malaysia is strategically positioned to meet this task in bridging the differences in practice of perinatology between the technologically advanced and less advanced nations. Issues as basic, but very vital, as breastfeeding and education will be given a fresh look while advances in artificial reproductive techniques and molecular genetics will also be given eminence.

Networking and interaction will be facilitated not only at the academic but also on the social level. We promise a tantalizing gustatory experience at many tea breaks and lunches, an illuminating time during the 'Social and Cultural Night' and a unique 'Gala Banquet'.

The Convention Centre for the Congress is located at a very attractive resort and accommodation is available at very competitive rates at it's 5-6 star hotel. More economical hotels and budget-rate accomodation have also been arranged to meet varying requirements of our participants.. Family members and friends will find the venue a good 'breakaway', and holiday villas by the Lagoon, fun and games in the theme park and a large shopping mall in the vicinity will ensure that there will never be a dull moment for the accompanying persons.

On behalf of the Perinatal Society of Malaysia and the Federation of Asia-Oceania Perinatal Societies I extend a warm welcome to all of you to be a part of this exciting

13th Congress of the FAOPS and the 11th Malaysian Annual Perinatal Congress.

Malaysia beckons and a exciting event awaits you!
